Some of our most well attended programs here at the library have been puppet shows. I wonder why that is. Is it because many of us baby boomers recall the magic of TV shows featuring puppets (and there were many)?
Howdy Doody

Kukla, Fran and Ollie
The Shari Lewis Show,
Paul Winchell and his dummy Jerry Mahoney and more recently

The Muppets.

And now you rarely see puppets anymore. But don't despair. Saturday, April 4th, at 1pm, Jean Mattson, formerly of the Seattle Puppetory Theater, will be presenting a free program titled Puppets, Puppets, Puppets as part of our Saturdays@the Library, "There's Always Something Going On! series. For over 25 years, Jean Mattson has been bringing the magic of puppetry to audiences of all ages. The Seattle Puppetory Theater has performed in many parts of the world including Japan, Spain, Pakistan and Mexico as well as the United States and Canada. During this time she has collected a closet-full of puppets of all kinds -- hand puppets, shadow puppets, marionettes, rod puppets, etc. and she will be sharing her puppets and the magic of puppetry during her program. These program is made possible by the generous support of the Mountlake Terrace Friends of the Library. So in these difficult economic times, here is an opportunity to share the joy of puppetry with your children or just come and reminisce. There is currently a lovely puppet display in our lobby and for more information on puppets Click Here

Teen Book Trailer Contest

Know any teens who are aspiring filmmakers? We are currently looking for entries for our Teen Tech Month Book Trailer contest. The winning teen can win a very cool Flip digital video camera!

All teens need to do is create a short (30 seconds to 3 minutes long) video of a book trailer -- like a movie trailer, but for a book! The video should be about a teen book, or a book that teens enjoy, owned by Sno-Isle Libraries. Then they post their video to YouTube, with the tag "snoisleteens" then fill out the entry form on this page. The deadline is April 15, 2009, so there are still a few weeks left to enter.

Last year we didn't have any entries for Mountlake Terrace...and I know we have talented teens. This could be a really fun way to spend a rainy Northwest afternoon!

March Madness

After a day of exploring the many public stairs of Queen Anne (for a map contact the Queen Anne Historical Society Click Here), I found myself in a bar atop Queen Anne, drinking fruit juice, and watching the final game in the Pac 10 Basketball Conference. Though not much of a sports fan myself, the significant other is as well as my son, and it was fun to join in the fervor as Husky and Cougar fans rooted for their team. Congratulations to the University of Washington's Men's Basketball Team, who are now the Pac-10 Champions. In all of this current doom and gloom, it is fun to witness the joy of this victory, especially in light of the less than stellar performances of Seattle's other major teams, the Mariners and Seahawks. We won't even go into losing the Seattle Sonics. To make it all the sweeter, the Huskies men's basketball team has not won a Pac-10 Conference championship title outright since 1953 (they tied in 1984 and 1985). It's times like these that make you want to root for someone or something and see a positive outcome, to feel pride when your team wins. That's what it's all about, I guess.

What is it about sports that makes so many people feel so strongly?

Let's have some fun.

How much do you know about your local champions?

Here's a fun facts quiz (answers at the bottom but don't cheat!)
1. What was the name of the team before Huskies was chosen in 1922?
2. What is the name of the Huskies fight song?
3. Despite claims by others, the Wave was originated at UW by what television co-host?
4. What is the name of the costumed mascot?
5. What other Division 1 colleges use the name Huskies?
6. Name two famous Husky alums who went on to play professional ball.
